Common types of vaginitis

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vaginal lining, which can lead to symptoms such as itching, discharge, odor, and discomfort. It can be caused by various factors, including infections, hormonal changes, and irritants.

There are several types of vaginitis:

  1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This is caused by an imbalance in the normal bacteria in the vagina. Symptoms often include a fishy odor, especially after sex, and a gray or white discharge.

  2. Yeast Infection (Candidiasis): Caused by an overgrowth of yeast (usually Candida), symptoms typically include itching, burning, and a thick, white discharge that resembles cottage cheese.

  3. Trichomoniasis: This is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms might include a frothy, green or yellow discharge, itching, and discomfort during urination or intercourse.

  4. Atrophic Vaginitis: This occurs when the vaginal lining becomes thin and dry, often due to decreased estrogen levels, such as after menopause. Symptoms can include dryness, itching, and discomfort during intercourse.

  5. Allergic Reactions or Irritants: Sometimes, vaginitis can be caused by allergic reactions to soaps, detergents, or other products, or by irritants such as douches or certain types of clothing.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause, so it’s important to see a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. They may recommend medications, lifestyle changes, or other interventions based on the specific type of vaginitis.
